My MIW Capstone Project: A Screenplay
The Designated Driver is, in many ways, the story of my sophomore year at Michigan. I spent my freshman year alone and depressed, gaining weight, struggling academically, and not making friends. It was, without question, one of the worst years of my life.
But during my sophomore year, with my new Mustang and my sobriety intact, I began driving people around when they had been drinking, and became the designated driver in my circle of friends. While the experience was full of ups and downs, it ultimately led to me making several friends that I still am close to today.
The challenge with the screenplay was balancing the the many, many funny anecdotes I had been writing down from my time "on the road" with the story of the protagonist's struggle with social anxiety, academics, and loneliness.
Writing this script was a lot of fun, because all of the characters are based on people from my life (and in very similar roles, with very similar names, too) and I was able to relive a lot of fun times in the process of brining this story to the page.
Below are the various elements of the writing process submitted for class: the original project proposal, the production plan and rubric, the treatment, the overview outline, the step outline, the character descriptions, and the actual screenplay.
